The Genesee CCS Project aims to deploy carbon capture technology at the Genesee Generating Station, near Warburg Alberta. Up to approximately three million tonnes of CO2 per year are forecasted to be captured and sequestered through this Project as early as 2027. The Project is part of Capital Power’s ongoing commitment to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. It builds on the ~3.4 million tonnes reduction of CO2 emissions per year set to be achieved through the Genesee Repowering Project which sees the Genesee 1 and 2 units transitioned to be best-in-class natural gas-fired combined cycle units.
The Project plans to deploy proven carbon capture technology on the unproven, low- CO2 concentration flue gas that comes from natural gas-fired combined cycle power generation. With up to three million tonnes of CO2 per year forecasted to be reduced by the addition of the carbon capture plant to the repowered units, the potential cumulative reduction from the Genesee CCS Project and the Genesee Repowering Project is ~6.4 million tonnes of CO2 per year. Operating with post-combustion carbon capture, the Genesee 1 and 2 units are positioned to provide reliable, firm, dispatchable power to Alberta with near-zero emissions for decades to come.
Engineering work progresses positively on the Genesee CCS Project, with pre-FEED engineering completed in early 2022. The Project started a FEED study in late second quarter of 2022, with a targeted completion date and final investment decision in 2023. Upon a successful final investment decision, the Project would progress into detailed engineering, procurement, and construction with a targeted Commercial Operations Date (COD) as early as 2027. This would enable significant GHG reductions by 2030, helping Alberta and Canada to meet GHG reduction targets.
