PolyCo is transforming the flooring industry with the next generation of resilient PVC-free flooring that is (1) focused on leveraging Alberta’s locally produced natural resources, (2) developed for circularity and zero-waste manufacturing with a single-plastic in its composition and free of dangerous or difficult chemicals to recycle, and (3) an Alberta-made low emission product that addresses a high demand in a growing  North American market, displacing carbon intensive products imported from Asia and disrupting a complex supply chain riddled with ethical and environmental challenges.

In this project, PolyCo will build the first-of-its-kind manufacturing facility with a 50% capacity (3 tons/hour), targeting initial revenue by 2027. The company has validated its polypropylene-based formulation and is set to bring an alternative product to the market based on circularity principles. The project aims to transform Alberta’s resources into high-value, eco-friendly consumer goods while reducing emissions in the construction sector, eliminating plastic waste, and creating local jobs.

The flooring industry is an overlooked sector of the construction industry. Billions of square feet of new floor coverings are manufactured and installed every year with little regard to sustainability, circularity and GHG impacts. The resilient flooring category, including the most popular Luxury Vinyl Flooring (LVF), has been the fastest growing category over the last years. However, LVF is almost all made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a problematic plastic for circularity and a carbon-intensive material. To improve its sustainability and lower its environmental impact, the flooring market requires alternative solutions that can be scaled up quickly and enable the displacement of the current supply. PolyCo’s vision is to lead the industry toward a more circular and environmentally responsible future, aligning with global efforts to decarbonize construction and promote sustainable development.
