Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) is seeking to deploy two (2) hydrogen fuel cell-powered locomotives into regular switching and local freight service in the Lethbridge, AB region. Hydrogen supply infrastructure using fixed-point and mobile Direct-To-Locomotive (DTL) refueling solutions will be deployed to support continuous operation of the locomotives throughout the two-and-a-half-year period of the project and beyond. The locomotives are designed to be fully capable of railyard (switcher) and line-haul work yet produce no direct emissions other than pure water vapor. Fueled by low-carbon, “blue” hydrogen produced from fossil fuel resources using carbon capture, which creates low carbon hydrogen supplied from Alberta’s energy sector using enhanced production processes equipped with carbon capture technology, these locomotives will demonstrate how the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions-intensity of rail transport can be significantly reduced from current diesel operations.
