ERA FUNDS WILL FOCUS ON TECHNOLOGIES SPECIFIC TO CCUS, HYDROGEN, AND RENEWABLE FUELS
EDMONTON, AB – Today, Emissions Reduction Alberta announced up to $5 million in funding to the Clean Energy Transition Partnerships (CETP) Joint Call 2022. CETP is a new transnational initiative for joint research, technological development, and innovation programming to pool funds and accelerate a broad variety of technologies and system solutions.
This global funding call is open to projects in 30 participating countries. ERA funding is sourced from the Government of Alberta’s Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) fund.
Joint Call 2022 is the first annual co-funded call under the CETPartnership and is co-funded by the European Commission under the Horizon Europe Partnership. ERA funding will focus on advancing technology solutions for renewable fuels and hydrogen, as well as Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS), with strong potential for commercialization in Alberta.
“Today’s announcement is a shining example of the TIER fund in action. Alberta is pleased to collaborate with innovators and countries from around the world on technology that diversifies the economy and cuts emissions, and we are eager to see the projects that come out of this funding call.”
Whitney Issik, Minister of Environment and Parks, Government of Alberta
“This partnership demonstrates ERA’s commitment to international collaboration and is an important way for countries to leverage new knowledge, expertise, and resources. We must continue to work across borders, oceans and industries with partnerships like the one announced today.”
Justin Riemer, CEO, ERA
Project proposals require a consortium consisting of at least three eligible applicants from at least three separate countries or regions participating in Joint Call 2022. Consortia can consist of partners from industry, local and regional governments, post-secondary, industry or research organizations, and NGOs.
Submissions for pre-proposals are due November 23, 2022, at 6 a.m. (MST). Funding is available for projects at the technology scale-up, field pilot, commercial demonstration, or commercial implementation stages.
ERA joined CETP in January 2022. CETP collaborates with funding partners within and beyond Europe to broaden the global knowledge and experience base and introduce European solutions and stakeholders to global value chains. The initiative enables 50 national and regional RTDI funding partners from 30 countries to align on priorities, pool budgets for two joint calls in 2022 and 2023, and to implement annual calls until 2027.

ABOUT EMISSIONS REDUCTION ALBERTA (ERA):
For more than 12 years, ERA has been investing revenues from the carbon price paid by large emitters to accelerate the development and adoption of innovative clean technology solutions. Since we were established in 2009, we have committed $830 million toward 230 projects worth $6.6 billion that are helping to reduce GHGs, create competitive industries and are leading to new business opportunities in Alberta. These projects are estimated to deliver cumulative GHG reductions of 40 million tonnes by 2030.
ABOUT TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION AND EMISSIONS REDUCTION (TIER) FUNDING:
The TIER system is funded by large industry that pay into the fund when they do not meet emissions targets. Alberta is using up to $700 million from the TIER fund for a range of programs that are reducing emissions, boosting the economy and getting Albertans back to work. This investment supports Alberta’s economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and low oil prices.
